Every SEO agency in Australia describes itself the same way. Data driven. Results focused. Proven strategies. The language is so uniform that it is genuinely difficult to tell a team doing real work from a monthly invoice with a report attached. This is what the work consists of when it is real, and the four things that separate the two.
An SEO agency improves how a website ranks in search engines, so it appears for the phrases its customers actually type. The work splits four ways: technical, meaning speed, crawlability and structured data; on-page, meaning page structure and copy written around real search terms; local, meaning Google Business Profile, reviews and a page for each area served; and off-page, meaning earning links from other sites. A real agency does all four. Plenty sell only the last one and report on the rest.
The four things an SEO agency does
1. Technical SEO
Making sure Google can reach every page, read it, and load it fast enough that visitors stay. Crawlability, indexing, site speed, mobile rendering, structured data, internal linking, and cleaning up the broken URLs and duplicate pages that accumulate on any site over a few years.
This is front-loaded work. It is heavy in the first two months and light after that, which is worth knowing when you are being quoted the same figure every month for two years.
2. On-page SEO and content
Deciding which page targets which search, then writing that page so it deserves to win. Title tags, meta descriptions, heading structure, and body copy that answers the question rather than circling it.
This is the most expensive line item in any proposal and the one that keeps working after you stop paying. A page published this year is still bringing in enquiries in three years. A month of technical maintenance is not.
3. Local SEO
For any business serving a defined area, this is where most of the return lives. Google Business Profile completed properly, reviews coming in steadily and being replied to, name and address details consistent across every directory, and a real landing page for each suburb or region you actually serve.
It is also the part most owners can do a meaningful share of themselves. The full method is in our guide to local SEO for Newcastle businesses.
Trades are the clearest case, because almost every search that turns into a job carries a suburb in it. How that changes what an agency should actually be building is set out on SEO for tradies.
4. Off-page SEO and links
Getting other websites to link to yours, which is still one of the strongest signals Google has for whether a site is worth trusting. Done properly it means industry directories, local sponsorships, supplier and partner pages, and being genuinely worth citing.
Done improperly it means buying links from networks that exist only to sell links. That works until it does not, and when it stops working it takes your rankings with it. Ask where links come from. An agency doing this honestly will tell you.
What an SEO agency is not
It is not a web designer, although the two overlap and the overlap is where most money is quietly wasted.
A designer who ignores search hands over a site with no schema, no location pages, thin copy and a slow mobile score. An agency then charges a monthly retainer to fix all of it. You pay twice for one job, and the second time you pay at retainer rates.
The cheaper arrangement is one team doing both, so the search work is inside the build rather than sold back to you afterwards. That is how we work: schema, page structure, keyword-mapped copy and 30 to 50 suburb pages are part of the build price, not a separate line.
The four warning signs
- A guaranteed ranking. Nobody controls Google, so nobody can promise a position. An agency that guarantees page one is either targeting phrases nobody searches, which is easy and worthless, or is about to do something that gets the site penalised
- No countable deliverables. If the proposal says ongoing optimisation and monthly monitoring without naming a number of pages, posts or fixes, you are buying activity rather than work
- Reporting on the wrong things. Impressions, keyword counts and average position are inputs. Enquiries, calls and quotes are outcomes. A report that leads with the first set and never mentions the second is managing your perception, not your results
- Silence on where links come from. Bought links from a network are the fastest way to lose everything you have built. If the question makes them uncomfortable, that is the answer
Do you need one at all?
A local business owner can do a real amount of this alone. Complete the Google Business Profile properly. Ask every satisfied customer for a review, every time. Make sure every service and every area you serve has its own page. Write down the answers to the questions customers actually ask you on the phone.
That is most of the value available to a local service business, and it costs time rather than money. Where an agency earns its fee is the technical work, the writing volume, and knowing which of a hundred possible phrases are worth chasing, which takes tools and hours most owners do not have spare.
What it costs when you do hire one is covered in how much SEO costs in Australia, and whether to spend the money there or on ads first is in SEO vs Google Ads.
Where Newcastle Web Co sits
We are a web design studio that builds the search work into the site rather than selling it beside it. The technical setup, schema, keyword-mapped copy and location pages are in the build price, and the ongoing content and local work runs through a monthly support plan with named deliverables rather than a retainer. The method is on the SEO service page.
If what you need is an agency to run a large national campaign across an existing ecommerce site, we are not that, and we will tell you so rather than take the work.
