What is the difference between SEO and local SEO?

SEO gets a page found for a topic. Local SEO gets a business found for a place. Most small businesses in Newcastle need the second, get sold the first, and can tell the two apart in about a minute once they know what to look for.

SEO gets a page found for a topic. Local SEO gets a business found for a place. They share some of the same work and none of the same goal, and most small businesses in Newcastle need the second, get sold the first, and pay for twelve months before they notice. Here is the difference in plain terms, a one-minute test for which one you need, and the case where you need both.

Short answer

SEO ranks a page in Google's ordinary results for a topic, and where the searcher is barely matters. Local SEO ranks a business for a place: searches with a suburb in them or a suburb implied, shown mostly in the map pack, and driven by the Google Business Profile, reviews, proximity and the match between the profile and the website. If your customers live within an hour's drive, local SEO is the one that brings work. General SEO is for a business that does not care where its customer is.

What SEO ranks, and where

Search engine optimisation is the work of getting a page to rank in the ordinary results, the list of links under the ads, for a search on a topic. How much does a website cost. Best hiking boots. What is a web consultant. The searcher could be anywhere in Australia and the result would be the same, because nothing about the question is about a place.

What moves it is the page: whether it answers the question better than the other pages on the topic, how many other sites link to it, how fast it loads, and whether the site as a whole is one Google has learned to trust. It is slow, because the competition is every page on the internet about that topic, and it compounds, because a page that earns links keeps earning them.

What local SEO ranks, and where

Local SEO is the work of getting a business found for a search with a place in it, or a place implied. Plumber Charlestown. Wedding hair Lovedale. Dentist near me. Google treats these differently from the moment they are typed: it shows a map with three businesses on it above the ordinary results, and it ranks those three on how close they are, how relevant the business is, and how much it trusts them.

The things that move it are mostly not on your website. The Google Business Profile comes first: its primary category, its reviews, its photos, its hours, and whether the name, address and phone on it match the ones on your site and everywhere else. Proximity is fixed. The website's job is to back the profile up: a page for the service, a page for each suburb you work in, and schema that tells Google the same facts the profile does. The five elements are set out in order in our local SEO guide for Newcastle businesses, so they are not repeated here.

The competition is different too. General SEO puts you against every page on the topic. Local SEO puts you against the businesses that do what you do within a drive of the searcher, which in a Newcastle suburb is often four or five, and most of them have never filled in their profile.

The one-minute test

Type your service and a suburb into Google. If a map with three businesses appears above the results, that search is local, and local SEO is what decides who is on it. Now type the service without a place. If the results are guides, comparison articles and national directories rather than businesses, that search is topical, and general SEO is what decides it.

Nearly every trade, clinic, salon, cafe and professional service in Newcastle gets a map on the first search and a page of articles on the second. That is the whole answer. The customer who is going to ring you searches with the place in it, or with "near me", and Google fills the place in for them.

When you need both

A local business with something to say needs both, in that order. The services and the suburb pages are local SEO and bring the calls. A blog post that answers a question people ask before they call, how long does a rewire take, what does a bridal trial cost, is general SEO, and it can rank nationally and earn links a service page never will. Those links raise the trust of the whole site, and the suburb pages ride on it. That is the mechanism, not a marketing claim, and it is why a well-run local site usually carries a small blog.

The trap is doing it the other way around: paying for months of blog content and link building while the Google Business Profile has no category set and the site has one page that names one suburb. That is general SEO sold to a local business, and it is the most common way a Newcastle business ends up eighteen months into a retainer with nothing to show. How to tell a real SEO agency from that is in what an SEO agency actually does.

What it means for what you buy

Local SEO is mostly build work and profile work, and both have an end. The on-page work, the schema and the suburb pages go into the site once; the profile is set up once and then kept current. That is why we build it into every site rather than selling it as a retainer, and why the ongoing part is a small monthly plan rather than a large one. The build side is on the SEO Newcastle page, and the suburb page method, with real numbers from a live site, is in the suburb SEO playbook.

The profile side is the part most businesses never get to, and it is the part that moves the map. If you want it run for you, the Local SEO plan optimises the profile in the first fortnight, then posts to it four times a week, answers every review and adds your photos monthly, on any website. If you would rather do it yourself, the guide above will get you most of the way, and we will tell you what is left.

SEO questionsStraight answers. No nonsense.

What people ask about this.

Yes, in what it ranks and where. SEO ranks a page in the ordinary results for a topic, and the searcher's location barely matters. Local SEO ranks a business for searches with a place in them or a place implied, and it shows up mostly in the map pack, where the signals are the Google Business Profile, reviews, proximity and the match between the profile and the website. The on-page work overlaps; the rest does not.

If your customers come to you or you go to them, and they live within an hour's drive, you need local SEO first. That is nearly every trade, clinic, salon, cafe and professional service in Newcastle. You need general SEO when you sell to people who do not care where you are: an online store, software, a national consultancy, or a blog that earns from an audience. A local business with a blog needs both, in that order.

A Google Business Profile can rank in the map pack on its own, so strictly no. In practice a profile with a matching website behind it outranks one without, because Google has two sources agreeing on the name, address, phone and services rather than one making a claim, and the website is the only one of the two that can rank in the ordinary results and answer the questions people ask before they call.

Less, because the competition is smaller and the work is more specific. A national SEO retainer in Australia runs $1,500 to $5,000 a month. Local SEO for a Newcastle business is a one-off build with the on-page work and suburb pages inside it, from $1,800, plus a monthly plan if you want the profile run or new pages added: Newcastle Web Co's are $200 to $850 a month for the website and $350 a month for the Google Business Profile, with no minimum term.
